Your point is excellent Ray.

PowerPoint is ONLY A TOOL. Many presenters rely too much on PowerPoint. If you’re not connecting with your audience on yourself, things will only get worst with presentation software.

As you say, some topics works best without slides. Depending of the audience and the topics, I will decide if I’m using PowerPoint or not. I love to speak with slides and I love to speak without them.

The use of presentation software shouldn’t be a matter of speaker preference, it should be a matter of strategic choice for best communication possible.

In reply to Emmanuelle Ares. Au-delà de trucs, outils et compétences, il a su nous démontrer que c'est le contenu et les émotions qui sont la force d'une présentation (idem pour les médias sociaux). Je suis sur que les gens ne sont pas repartis déçus de ne pas avoir eu de trucs magiques. Ils ont eu beaucoup beaucoup mieux.

Denis, I saw Seth Godin talk at The ARt of Marketing and he made a point of not using a power Point presentation.

There were a lot of A-listers there, but he was the only one.
The effect was mesmerizing. He had everyone’s complete attention. Yes, he’s a brilliant speaker and yes, he has an amazing mind. But he was talking about big ideas and sometimes big ideas don’t translate well into bullet points.

I recently did a talk and decided to forgo a powerpoint. Aside from a short introductory video, I spoke without a net.

The result was one of the most interactive and engaging talks I’ve ever had.
I don’t say that this is best for every presentation. Technical or presentations that explain procedures are powerpoint friendly; but I go back to when I was a student. As soon as the prof pulled down the screen, he might as well have been pulling down my eyelids.

Est-ce que les gens venus assister à une conférence du King de Twitter, Scott Stratten, sont repartis déçus, sans trucs magiques et secrets d’utilisation?
Personnellement, ce sont 14 minutes qui m’ont fait verser une larme.
On dit que la référence fait le contenu, que tout contenu prendra la valeur qu’on accorde à ceux qui nous le font découvrir et qui l’ont partagé.
Scott l’a compris. Tout contenu partagé par lui aura dorénavant une valeur ajoutée monstre. Il a touché les gens et montré qu’il vaut plus que ses compétences.
Ça me fait penser à une blague qui circule: “Je suis sur Twitter, Facebook, Google + et Skype” -“As-tu une vie avec ça?” -“Quoi? Non! Tu peux m’envoyer le lien?”
