People Presentability

I watched this presentation on slideshare today. It’s about the details that differentiate sexy and « slutty ».  Sorry for « slutty ». It’s the name of the presentation.

The presentation made me think.

When trying to seduce or to be likable, their is a line that we must respect.

I suggest that you watch the presentation and that you share it with your teenagers.

For those of you who read french, @MarioAsselin wrote an excellent post about this today : Séduisante ou agace: c’est quoi la différence? Mario was working in school and he share his experience.

When we do things like everybody else, because “that’s the way it’s supposed to be done”, we are unnoticed.  Nobody sees us. We have no specific flavor. We are forgettable (and we are forgotten).

To stand out from the crowd, we need to be different, unique. We have to surprise our costumers, our audience, our coworkers.

Here are some examples of organizations and people that dare to be different. Be inspire by them and find ways to “WOW” your costumers.

You are single. You are not a sham of it. Even if you feel the pressure of your relative. You are proud of it, but open to meet someone.

Then, you will be interest by Singelringen. REVOLUTIONART issue 12

What’s that? Stay with me, I will show you.

I read an article in REVOLUTIONART Magazine (issue 12) – A must read magazine for creativity.

The article was about Johan Wahlback, a designer (or not?) from Sweden and his idea for single people.

The idea came up during a dinner
with a friend.

“We started to discuss
how much we loved our freedom and our life as singles. However, both of us felt pressure from our surroundings – friends and family who started to become a bit pushy about why we did not find ourselves a serious relationship/ marriage”.

… “how hard it was to spot singles in a bar, in a nightclub, at the gym, or just on the subway”.

… “I came up with the idea that why should not singles have a ring on their hand to show their pride and coolness of being single, but at the same time in a discrete form signifying that you are “available”.

Why? Because you are not as beautiful as you want, you don’t know how to tell jokes, you are shy, you are boring, you have a physical handicap, you have a speech impediment, etc.

Don’t waste your time and ours. Run away from stage. Period.

Wrong.

Change your mindset. Audience is not there for you. You are there for THEM. Change the focus from you to them. You are there to help them. You have somethingspeakschmeakheader2 to share. Forget what is “limiting you”.

I found an interesting testimonial from speech coach Lisa Braithwaite. Is a  speech impediment an impediment? She has a lisp and it has never impeded her progress as a speaker.

As she says: “we all have insecurities”. But, it is a part of our uniqueness. Don’t let it paralyze us. Good testimonial.

In the last days, there was a big buzz around BritSusan Boyleain’s Got Talent Susan Boyle. She is more “the girl next door” than a top model.

That did not stop her. She went to the show and blown away the judges and the audience whit her talent. Wow! What a good signer.

Click on the picture to see and hear her.

Get over your imperfections and your fears. Think that you are there to help the audience.

Yesterday, i attend some conference at lunch time. The young women sitting next to me wasn’t eating. She looked preoccupied.

When she got up, left the table et started her presentation, i understood why she wasn’t eating. She was the speaker and she was nervous to speak in front of a group of people.

In fact, she was noticeably nervous during her presentation, but wow, she delivered! She started slowly with her personnel story. Speaker, Woman, Buterfly iStock_000004776255XSmallShe went to London to study (she’s living in Quebec, Canada). Etc.

But then, she started to talk about what she lived there, her day to day life, her discovery, her emotion. We could almost be there. We we’re earring the sound of the bird went she sat in the park.

At the end, when she said that her dream was over, she had to return home, we felt the emotion in her voice. And we felt the emotion in our heart.

She did a wonderful presentation. She touched us. And that’s the greatest presentation i assisted in a long time.

When she sat back next to me, the nervousness was gone. She was able to eat.
