Do you still need a Business Card?

In this electronic era, we tend to diminished the use of business cards. We have interaction with people from Everywhere on the planet. Some of them that we never encountered face to face (or most of them).

  • So, do you still need a business card?

Think about it. Every information about you is accessible online. You have Web site, signature or vCard in your email, Twitter, Social sites. Why a business card?

A business cards add a little something.

We can touch it, feel it, smell it. Of course, your card as design, colors  and typeface  like your Web site. But it as more. The texture of the paper you choose, it’s weight, it’s edge, etc. Everything about your business card give information about you and your organization.

When we receive your card, we have an impression, a felling that we cannot have with an electronic contact.

Can you do business without a business card? Of course. Lot of professional do. If you do 100 % of your business online, like some programmers or designers, it’s possible. If you are a real estate agent, it’s not possible. It depends of your industry.

If you have face to face meeting with your customers, business cards are important. There is still a perception that professional have card.

With the advent of a new technology from Microsoft namely “Microsoft Tag”, base on the Quick response barcode, paper base business cards may get a boost. The main challenge with paper base business card is to convert them to electronic format.

Microsoft tag technology transform your cellphone into a barcode reader. The common electronic format of a business card “VCF” can be transfer to your cellphone address book with one click using your cellphone, a paper business card tag and the free MS Tag reader.

    Hello Denis,

Interesting post! When I receive a business card from a contact, I try to convert the information into electronic data and throw away the card. But every time, the action of putting the card into garbage requires a bit of effort. I still need to convince myself that I will not need the card anymore. This tends to confirm that the printed version of a business card has a real value.

I remember a trick from one of my client in the business of selling tires. He stamped a 10% discount coupon on the back of its business cards. People receiving the card were hesitant to dispose of it, feeling that it had real money value. He said it worked great and people were even passing the card around to have their friends benefit from it.

I have a question for you. Would go as far as making up your own version of your business card in order to give it a maximum value, even if your employer provide you with a standard “corporate approved” one?

    Have a great day!

If you have enough design knowledge, you can easily do it yourself.

The problem could be on the printing side. You want to look professional and avoid those cheap home made business cards.

Your right. It is a challenge to convert business card to an electronic format and put the information in our CRM or other database. I never thought of using 3D bar coding or tags for business cards. Thanks for sharing.

Usually, I am “corporate.” I am using corporate material and I like to have the approved “look and feel.” But under certain circumstances, I had developed my own material.
