Separate carefully your public & private image

Thanks to Internet, it’s now easy to share our lives with others. Text, pictures, movies. We can distantly communicate with friends and family.

But, it’s also easy to share that life with millions of strangers that are using Internet every day.

Stacy Snyder found out that there is a line between public life and private life. She was denied a teaching degree just days before Drunken Pirategraduating because she posted a picture of her as “Drunken Pirate” on MySpace. The full story is here.

What is interesting is not whether or not the University was right. It’s the fact that what we post online will influence people’s opinion about us.

We need to draw a line between public image and private image and decide what goes where.

Of course, we are not responsible of what other think of us. But we are responsible of what WE EXPOSE to them.

We have the freedom to expose ourselves or parts of our life. But others have the freedom to judge us based on what they see. And it’s a fact we have to accept.

Think twice before posting anything. Is it private or public? If it’s private, take the appropriate measure to be sure that only selected people will see your posting.

Remember that employers are using search engine to see your Internet presence.
